Film Opening Research #1 - The Lord Of The Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring)

The Lord Of The Rings Franchise is known for its amazing camera work and film direction. We will analyze the title sequence depicted in this video:


 

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

The title is shown only once, almost at the immediate beginning of the film.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

They introduce the forging and division of the Rings of Power along with the backstory and events that lead up to the movie which is the main purpose of the whole film.

What connotations do the images carry? 

The images bring a negative connotation since the opening scene feels mystical and foreboding.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? 

The genre of fantasy is obviously reinforced through depictions of magic and fictional beings like elves and orcs, and magical objects like rings of power.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

The film starts of by narrating a brief & interesting backstory of the film to the readers, showing impressive characters in this fictional universe that makes it seem expansive and similar to our reality, like the story of civilizations and war. 

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.     

The mystical theme is greatly evoked from the fade transition in the beginning, fading from black and using low-key lighting. It also uses continuity editing and montage editing to show passage of time in certain events. Dissolve transitions are also used when the narrator explains events that happened on the map with scenes from what happened. The camera also makes heavy use of close up shots to emphasize the importance of certain objects, like the rings of power being worn and the people wearing them. A combination of practical and CGI effects are used to make special effects that were considered impressive at the time the movie was made. These are all effective techniques that were used to give the film an impressive and alluring opening sequence.

Fight scenes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a very impressive movie, but one of it's most entertaining aspects are its action scenes! Sound Story

       This is our Foley audio clip along with the video of where the sounds came from. The process started off with how we could make a story using the environment around us, which at the time was school. Thus, our story would be a student packing up and walking to a classroom. We created this mostly with noises that come from common objects, like zippers, papers, and pencils to symbolize a school/work environment. We made sure to record very closely with our microphone to capture the best quality of sound in a secluded area to isolate the noise, and to make all the sounds loud so we could lower their volume in post.      The first attempt at editing was difficult because we had to find a decent video and audio software to splice the audio and visuals together, we. Five Shot Video Post

This first shot is an extreme closeup of my partner. I held the camera very close to his face to focus on his eyes throughout the scene. The purpose of this shot is to emphasize the facial features and emotions the person in the video as he acts through the scene (i.e. gradually opening eyes and changing posture) This shot is a low angle shot of a person walking down the stairs. It was slightly difficult trying to capture the angle but it was manageable after a couple times. The purpose behind this shot is to distort size, making the viewer seem smaller than the subject swiftly moving down the stairs, and the subject appears to be moving quicker than they actually are due to the low angle. This is a medium-full shot of a person sitting on a bench. This was relatively easy, as the only obstruction was the glare from the sky.
