Film Opening Research #2 - Movie Title

 The Matrix is a very famous movie trilogy that was known for its fresh & ground-breaking style. The impressive style and work was made possible through specific filming techniques. I will be analyzing the opening sequence of in the first movie of The Matrix as shown from the video below:


How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? 

The title of the movie, "The Matrix" is shown once, after displaying Warner Bros. Pictures & Village Roadshow Pictures.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

Images of code floating down the screen, symbolizing the code of the simulation that is the Matrix, which is a very important aspect of the film. 

What connotations do the images carry? 

Negative connotations, as the code is the tool that is used to control the simulation and the people within.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? 

With the genre being Sci-Fi, the futuristic floating texts of code in the Matrix symbolizes the future of technology and its power & control. The costume design of the main characters are also Sci-Fi inspired 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

The title sequence had an amazing animation just to show the title, along with a narrator immediately presenting a conflict, whether they should eliminate the main character or not. This creates mystery to accompany the interesting visuals that most viewers weren't familiar with. 

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. 

The first few scenes involved low-key lighting to make a mysterious and sinister tone. Using close up shots to build tension in the scene as they investigate the main characters. Using elliptical editing between conversations and dynamic editing when action picks up a little. Soft focus is used to direct audience attention to important people or objects. Technology has been used to make the opening sequence of this film impressive and fascinating.

Sound Story

       This is our Foley audio clip along with the video of where the sounds came from. The process started off with how we could make a story using the environment around us, which at the time was school. Thus, our story would be a student packing up and walking to a classroom. We created this mostly with noises that come from common objects, like zippers, papers, and pencils to symbolize a school/work environment. We made sure to record very closely with our microphone to capture the best quality of sound in a secluded area to isolate the noise, and to make all the sounds loud so we could lower their volume in post.      The first attempt at editing was difficult because we had to find a decent video and audio software to splice the audio and visuals together, we. Five Shot Video Post

This first shot is an extreme closeup of my partner. I held the camera very close to his face to focus on his eyes throughout the scene. The purpose of this shot is to emphasize the facial features and emotions the person in the video as he acts through the scene (i.e. gradually opening eyes and changing posture) This shot is a low angle shot of a person walking down the stairs. It was slightly difficult trying to capture the angle but it was manageable after a couple times. The purpose behind this shot is to distort size, making the viewer seem smaller than the subject swiftly moving down the stairs, and the subject appears to be moving quicker than they actually are due to the low angle. This is a medium-full shot of a person sitting on a bench. This was relatively easy, as the only obstruction was the glare from the sky.
