Preparing to film opening sequence!

    There is a lot more to a film than just taking a video. In this blog, I will be writing about how we will come about filming our opening scene. 


    The first aspect of this movie opening is recording it! This task will probably be challenging, as there are so many ways to film a scene to bring out certain moods. We have a good idea of what to use and where to shoot based on our story board that was created for this film. We also have to come up with enough content to have enough footage for just below two minutes. Another challenge is coming up with a time and place for us to meet up and film. Considering that this film will be shot at night, we have to make enough time to be available by then, and not too late to where we have to go home.

    Another important aspect of film is the actors within. We are nothing close to being professional actors, but we're comfortable with being filmed on camera and we can communicate with each other to make sure the action is performed correctly. Based on our story board, there won't be much need for skilled acting as there is little dialogue in the whole film, and a lot more general every-day actions. It makes sense since our film is based on real life.


    After we have our film, one relatively easy part will be editing it in post. With enough footage, we may choose which recordings best convey the plot and mood of the film. Editing is also great since we get to add special effects to the film, like ambient noises and music. Luckily for us, we already have the software needed to edit our film in post and to add sound effects.

    We mostly have everything we need to start filming our opening for our movie. All we need is to figure out what locations to film at, and what time we should get together to start the recording. We will start filming around a week from now, and I think we have what it takes to complete the recording part in one or two meetups. Everything else like post editing and audio production can be handled digitally.

Sound Story

       This is our Foley audio clip along with the video of where the sounds came from. The process started off with how we could make a story using the environment around us, which at the time was school. Thus, our story would be a student packing up and walking to a classroom. We created this mostly with noises that come from common objects, like zippers, papers, and pencils to symbolize a school/work environment. We made sure to record very closely with our microphone to capture the best quality of sound in a secluded area to isolate the noise, and to make all the sounds loud so we could lower their volume in post.      The first attempt at editing was difficult because we had to find a decent video and audio software to splice the audio and visuals together, we. Five Shot Video Post

This first shot is an extreme closeup of my partner. I held the camera very close to his face to focus on his eyes throughout the scene. The purpose of this shot is to emphasize the facial features and emotions the person in the video as he acts through the scene (i.e. gradually opening eyes and changing posture) This shot is a low angle shot of a person walking down the stairs. It was slightly difficult trying to capture the angle but it was manageable after a couple times. The purpose behind this shot is to distort size, making the viewer seem smaller than the subject swiftly moving down the stairs, and the subject appears to be moving quicker than they actually are due to the low angle. This is a medium-full shot of a person sitting on a bench. This was relatively easy, as the only obstruction was the glare from the sky.
