Story Board for a movie clip

    In this blog post, I will illustrate and describe a story board for the famous opening sequence to Star Wars: A New Hope. 

    Story boarding is an essential process to making and planning out a film. Story boards consist of key frames in the mise-en-scene that depict what the camera can see, and the transitions and editing used in particular scenes. Off to the side or on the pictures are small descriptions of what is happening in the frame and describing any features that aren't obvious in the picture, like placement of props, lighting, audio, etc.

    Using a story board is essential for visualizing a film, especially for others to see what you visualize. Sometimes, story boards can be so detailed that directors can watch the film through these sketches before anything is actually recorded. This allows anyone working on the film to see what it would look like before it gets to the expensive recording part.

    Story boarding comes with it's own challenges. One of the biggest and most common challenges of these story boards is putting and idea or visualization down on paper detailed enough for other people to understand what is being seen in your mind. Another challenge is organizing everything in the scene to include not only the mise-en-scene, but editing, audio design, and other things that can't be described with a sketch. This ensures the film will have fluidity and something to follow.

Fight scenes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a very impressive movie, but one of it's most entertaining aspects are its action scenes! Sound Story

       This is our Foley audio clip along with the video of where the sounds came from. The process started off with how we could make a story using the environment around us, which at the time was school. Thus, our story would be a student packing up and walking to a classroom. We created this mostly with noises that come from common objects, like zippers, papers, and pencils to symbolize a school/work environment. We made sure to record very closely with our microphone to capture the best quality of sound in a secluded area to isolate the noise, and to make all the sounds loud so we could lower their volume in post.      The first attempt at editing was difficult because we had to find a decent video and audio software to splice the audio and visuals together, we. Five Shot Video Post

This first shot is an extreme closeup of my partner. I held the camera very close to his face to focus on his eyes throughout the scene. The purpose of this shot is to emphasize the facial features and emotions the person in the video as he acts through the scene (i.e. gradually opening eyes and changing posture) This shot is a low angle shot of a person walking down the stairs. It was slightly difficult trying to capture the angle but it was manageable after a couple times. The purpose behind this shot is to distort size, making the viewer seem smaller than the subject swiftly moving down the stairs, and the subject appears to be moving quicker than they actually are due to the low angle. This is a medium-full shot of a person sitting on a bench. This was relatively easy, as the only obstruction was the glare from the sky.
